Ada Elizabeth Wiewel, 88, of Oklahoma City, passed away May 28, 2017 after a brief illness. She was born January 28, 1929 in Oklahoma City to Edward Francis Landgraf, Sr. and Ruth Mellinee Landgraf.
She was a proud graduate of Oklahoma City University with a Math Degree. At OCU, she was active in many organizations including Delta Zeta sorority. She was recognized at the 1980 Homecoming as a member of OCU Royalty and Honor Graduates. She was also elected to the OCU Alumni Board of Directors.
Following college, Ada became active in Coronado Club, where she met her beloved husband, Thomas Wiewel. She served that group in varying roles, including president.
She worked as a part time bookkeeper/treasurer for Harold's Shoes and later for Bishop McGuinness High School in the finance office. During her working years, she and Tom raised two sons, Robert and Edward Wiewel.
She was a devout Catholic and member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. At St. Francis, she served Rosary Catholic School as a Christian education teacher, Vice President of Rosary Home and School Association and was active in Altar Society. She was appointed as Communion Minister in 1973 and served the sick and elderly delivering Holy Communion many years. In 1982, Ada was honored by St. Francis of Assisi parish as the Lady of Achievement. Because of her knowledge of the church's school, she was asked to write the history of Rosary School. Finally, in 2003-4, she received the distinguished graduate of Rosary School Award. Ada was very active in NCCW, ACCW and CRCCW in which she held many offices including President. She was awarded a 35-year pin in 2011 from Archbishop Coakley.
Ada devoted her entire life to God and family. With the strong commitment to Catholic education, she made certain her sons attended Rosary School and later Bishop McGuinness High School., where both graduated. She was very involved in scouting activities for many years. Besides church and scouting, she loved to spend time with her husband and sons while gardening at the family homestead in Okarche. She never stopped volunteering and later spending her free time tending to her five grandsons, babysitting, helping with homework and teaching many valuable life lessons. She had a unique and special bond with her eldest grandson, Thomas, which remained until her death.
She always put others needs before her own and did not know how to ask others for help.
Ada is survived by her loving sons, Robert Thomas Wiewel and Edward Augustin Wiewel and his wife Piper, along with 5 grandsons, Thomas, Edward Jr., Joseph, Matthew and Jonathan. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Hixson and brother, Edward Francis Landgraf, Jr., and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 30 years, Thomas Aquinas Wiewel, her parents and her brother, Tom Landgraf, Sr.
An Evening Prayer Service will be held at Smith and Kernke (NW 23rd Street location) Wednesday, May 31st at 7 P.M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Thursday, June 1st at 10 A.M. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society for the Poor and Needy.
