Agnes Weatherall Olive of Granbury, TX passed away peacefully Oct. 18, 2011 at the age of 92. She was born March 22, 1919 in Havana, AR to George and Ada Weatherall. Her family moved to OKC where she attended Capitol Hill High School, OCU, and was employed by Kerr-McGee as an assistant cashier. After retirement, she became acutely interested in adult literacy. She served as the first executive director of the Oklahoma Literacy Council. In recognition of her devotion and service to alleviating illiteracy, Governor Frank Keating, by Gubernatorial Proclamation of the State of Oklahoma, designated April 1, 1997, as Agnes Olive "First Lady of Literacy" Day in OK. She received the Oklahoma Literacy Council "Keeper of the Flame" award signed by General Stafford and, at the 1987 annual conference in San Francisco of the American Library Trustee Association, she received its annual award for her "contribution to addressing the literacy problem in the U.S." She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a longtime member of Olivet Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Superintendent for Youth before transferring her membership to Quail Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Olive is survived by one daughter, Becky R. Payne (Ron) of Breckenridge, TX; one son, W. Robert Olive, Jr. (Mary) of Tallahassee, FL; four grandchildren, Martha Olive-Hall (Bill), Ron Payne, Jr. (Emily), M. Eliza Thompson (John) and Laura Payne Butler; and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Rae Brown, of OKC and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, W. Robert Olive, Sr.; one grandson, Hugh Taylor Olive; and brother, Raymond Weatherall. A Funeral Service will be held at 11a.m. on Mon., Oct. 24, 2011 at Smith & Kernke Chapel followed by interment at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at 4pm on Tues., Oct. 25 at Quail Park Retirement Center in Granbury, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
