Just as the Colorado River winds its way through the Grand Canyon creating magnificent vistas; Al Dilis has wound his way through 99 years of life, finally ending his journey in the majestic kingdom of God. Algerd Dilis was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 13, 1918, to Steven and Ursula Dilis. He graduated Tilden Technical High School where he played French horn in the school orchestra and excelled in art. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1941, and found the love of his life, Lila Lee in Enid, OK. They were married at Vance Air Force Base on February 17, 1944 and celebrated their 70th anniversary before Lila passed away on May 21, 2014. Al continued his music career in the Oklahoma City Symphony with Victor Alessandro and Guy Fraser Harrison as conductors. He honed his speaking talents as an engineer with the Oklahoma Highway Department, held public hearings on state road projects, was involved with the Knights of Columbus, Toastmasters, volunteered at St Anthony's Hospital, and also served on the City of the Village Board. It was after his retirement in 1981, when he began his record-setting travel, rafting through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. Fifteen times he shot the rapids, photographing God's creations and having adventures which deserved being repeated time and time again. His new adventures have now begun! Algerd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lila; sister, Lillian LeLievre; brother, Gedman "Jack"; son, James; son-in-law, Frank.
