June 14, 2018 surrounded by her family. Known as Nana to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend and a Jesus-follower who always had a twinkle in her eye. She impacted the lives of her children, Joanna and husband Michael Smith, Nancy and husband Bob, Don and wife Mary Katherine and Paul and wife Salle. Joanne's husband of 59 years, Glenn, as well as her daughter Nancy preceded her in death.
Her large and close family, which she affectionately called the "the inlaws and the outlaws" includes 12 Alice Joanne Dotson Trimble born on May 16, 1932 in Shawnee, Oklahoma entered heaven on Thursday grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Joanne was the oldest of three and her younger siblings, George and wife Phyllis Dotson and sister, Mary Dotson and their families added to the fun and the "chaos" that made holiday celebrations memorable. Her family and friends were a continuing source of joy and Nana encouraged all of us with her frequent notes of thanks and encouragement.
Her story outside of the wonderful relationships she cultivated included living her early life in South America, skipping a grade in elementary school, graduating from Chickasha High School at 17 and then finishing her teaching degree in three years at Oklahoma College for Women. Joanne was a strikingly beautiful young woman and in 1951 at the age of 19, she married the handsome engineer who lived next door and who was obviously taken by many things, including her beautiful red hair. She and Glenn moved to Oklahoma City shortly thereafter where she began her important and focused career as a homemaker and child shaper. Our mother was a terrific cook, an avid gardener, and an accomplished seamstress making all of the dresses including the bridal gown and all bridesmaids' dresses for both daughters' weddings. She continued until the week of her homecoming to crochet receiving blankets as gifts of love for friends and families.
To anyone whose attention she could wrangle, our mom would talk in detail about how cute and capable were her grandchildren- Molly, Rachel, Ryan and wife Katherine Smith, Trent Carter and wife Jennifer, Anne Bloomquist and husband Brett, Katie Schmidt and husband Peter, Erin Hicks and husband Jonathan, Blake Trimble, Sarah Katherine Trimble, Emma Heinen and husband John, Francie and David Trimble. If she still had an audience she would talk about her wonderful great-grandchildren: Felicity, Hattie, and Benjamin Hicks, Mitchell and Elizabeth Carter, Kiptyn and Carter Bloomquist, and Wyatt Michael Smith, with more on the way.
While impossible to list all of her friends, we want to specifically thank her caregivers, Jessica and Mila Carrillo, Ruth Hernandez, Ana, Luz, Arleeda and the compassionate team at Eden Care Homes as well as her patient and loyal friends, especially Gayle Jones at the donut store.
A memorial service will be held at Crossings Community Church, 14600 N Portland Ave on Wednesday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m. Please celebrate her life with us by contributing in lieu of flowers to one of her favorite topics of conversation, Hearts for Hearing at HeartsforHearing.org or 11500 N.
