Ann Carolyn (Leithead) Hughes, 89, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, January 5, 2022 following a long struggle with COPD. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her children.Ann was born in Des Moines, Iowa on October 7, 1932 to Barry T. and Alberta (Hamilton) Leithead. She grew up with her older brother and two younger sisters, graduating from Scarsdale High School in Scardsdale, NY. She graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL with a bachelor's degree in English and was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.Following graduation from Northwestern, Ann married classmate William L. Hughes on August 27, 1954, in Scarsdale, NY, later settling in Oklahoma City. She worked briefly for an oil company while her husband completed medical school before staying home to raise their three children. During those years, Ann was actively involved with Chi Omega, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and its annual Symphony Show House, and the Ladies Auxiliary at Presbyterian Hospital. She returned to the workforce in 1995 after obtaining her real estate license and worked for Marilyn Torbett Co. for many years before retiring at the tender age of 83.Ann was an accomplished horsewoman from a young age, a terrific and talented seamstress, an avid bridge and tennis player, and a long-time member of the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. She had an open heart and open door, taking in and loving both people and animals in need of a home. Despite having a house full of family and dogs, Ann immediately agreed to a grandchild's request to bring a kitten into the family (and the kitten is thriving). Ann went above and beyond to work with her real estate colleagues and to guide clients successfully to closing. She was a wonderful friend: compassionate, kind, and generous, with a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend; she is greatly missed.Ann is survived by her daughters, Hilary (Stan) Young and Leslie (Tod) Hardin and granddaughter Katie Hardin; son, David (Jaime Andrew) Hughes and grandchildren Ryan Hughes (with girlfriend Rachel Frans), Blair (Ryan) Sneed, Andy Hughes, Ryder Grooms, Jayden Andrew, and Jack Andrew; brother, Roger B.
