Arlene Winzenburg Coulter was born August 24, 1920, in Waverly, Iowa, to George and Hulda Martha (Weber) Winzenburg. She died September 20, 2010 in Oklahoma City at Mercy Health Center. Arlene grew up in Waverly, where she graduated from high school in May 1939. She soon moved to San Francisco to join her sister. Near the end of World War II, she met George Coulter, a Navy serviceman, at a dance in SF. After George's discharge in December 1945, they set out in George's Chrysler to be home for Christmas. The car broke down in Arizona and they completed the trip by train. They were married in Waverly on May 24, 1946, and recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. George and Arlene's first home was in Lincoln, Nebraska. They later moved to Oklahoma City where George continued his employment with Western Electric (Lucent).
Arlene was a busy and committed Mother to her two children: Tim and Cynthia. She was co-owner and accountant in their business, G & A Car Wash. She was active in the community serving as a volunteer with Oklahoma City Literacy Society, President of Zanta Service Club, and singing in the choir for many years at Our Lord's Lutheran Church. She was a talented crossword puzzle solver and a champion Scrabble player. She was also an enthusiastic athlete and scored a hole-in-one at an Edmond golf course.
Arlene was awarded The Golden Rule Award presented on behalf of the community by J.C. Penney for outstanding volunteer service. She was named Queen of Brighton Gardens by her fellow residents in her first year of residence there.
Arlene is survived by her husband, George, of Brighton Gardens/OKC, and children, Tim, of Hollywood, CA, and Cynthia of New York state. Nieces: Sharon Williams (Max), Monument, CO; Elaine Mahrenholz (Joe), Panora, IA; and Nephew: Brian Scully (Julie), Anchorage, AK. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law: Florence and Richard Scully; and her brother, Walter Winzenburg, all of Waverly, IA.
