Betty Jean Tirey

Betty Jean Tirey left earth for Heaven on February 8, 2022, following a brief illness. Her passing will leave a void in the hearts of many.Betty was born on March 6, 1932, in Oklahoma City to Effie Beatrice Turner Stewart and William Henry Stewart and was a life-long resident of Oklahoma City. She graduated from Northeast High School where she was a member of Norket Pep Club, Clique Charmae, and was the editor of NORDLYS Yearbook. After graduating, she attended Oklahoma State University where she majored in journalism and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While at OSU, she married her high school sweetheart, Tom Tirey.Following her years at OSU, Betty worked for her father's companies, Stewart Sheet Metal Heat & Air Contractors and WH Stewart Co in downtown Oklahoma City. She was the bookkeeper for Stewart Sheet Metal Heat & Air Contractors and WH Stewart Co, in addition to overseeing employee training, insurance benefits, and retirement plans for WH Stewart Co.Betty was a dedicated follower of Christ and a faithful member of Lakeside Assembly of God Church. She was a devoted caregiver to her mother and her eldest daughter through each of their extended illnesses. Always a people person, Betty was active in many civic groups including Jr. Hospitality. She also enjoyed traveling and playing mahjong with her friends. Known by all to be a caring person, she treated everyone fairly and was a loyal sister, mother, grandmother, and friend.She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Bea Stewart, daughter Susan Lynne McDermott, and nephews David Lowell Stewart and William Ramsey Stewart.Betty is survived by her son, Craig G. Tirey (OKC); daughter, Cynthia L. Smith (OKC); brother Lowell Stewart and wife Vivian (OKC); sister Karen Williamson and husband Roy (Midland, TX); grandson Jacob C. Smith and wife Mary (OKC); granddaughter Elizabeth A. Tirey (OKC), 2 great-grandchildren, Corbin G. Tirey and Braylen P. Tirey; nieces Shari Smith, Lynda Dycus, Jana Smith, Amy Martinez; nephew Michael Stewart. The entire family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Betty's caregiver Denell Payne.Viewing will be Monday, Feb 14, 2022, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM @ Smith & Kernke, 14624 N. May, OKC, OK 73134. A celebration of life will occur at a later date. Although flowers are appreciated, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Humane Society or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
