Betty Jo Dawson, age 81 died peacefully and without pain New Years Day, 2015 at OU Medical Center Edmond, Ok. Betty was born March 31, 1933 in a small town in southeast Oklahoma the daughter of James J and Allie Mae Holt maiden name Griggs. She married Lanham Isaac Dawson, Jr. and they eventually had five children, 4 sons and a daughter. Betty and Lanham moved to Yukon, Oklahoma in 1950 to raise their family. As the mother of five children, her life was a busy one with never a dull moment. After raising their family, the empty- nesters decided to make their home on Lake Eufaula where they would spend the next 23 years. Their grandchildren agree some of their happiest and most memorable times were at grandma's house on the lake. In 2003, they returned to Oklahoma City to be nearer family. Words cannot adequately express the level of dedication and devotion she had for her family. To those who loved her, Betty will be remembered as simply "THE BEST" ... she was the best mom, the best grandmother, the best ever food was made by her, (i.e. her famous peach cobbler), the best laughter was shared with her, and the best ever hugs and kisses were from her. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Lanham, her son Ronnie, her sisters Margie and Nedra and by her brother Alford. Those left to cherish her memory are her children Richard Dawson of Edmond, Oklahoma, Butch Dawson of Clayton, Oklahoma, Gary Dawson of Houston, Texas and Gwendolyn Dawson of Edmond, Oklahoma, her sisters Billie Tyler of Hurst, Texas and Vickey Eickenhorst of Lott, Texas along with 17 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends and others whose lives Betty touched are invited to the Smith-Kernke Funeral Home at 10:30 Wednesday morning January 7, 2015, to grieve, support each other, and of course just to chat. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery, Checotah, Oklahoma.
