Bill passed away March 1, 2021, at his home in Edmond surrounded by family. He was born November 27, 1933, in Custer City, Oklahoma, to John William and Beatrice McDown. He grew up in Custer City and later attended OU. Bill married Ruth Dittmer in Custer City on August 9, 1952. He began his career as a clerk at Safeway in Clinton. As he progressed with Safeway, he worked in Northern California, Nevada and Montana. He then spent two years in Saudi Arabia before returning to the states to Colorado. His last office was in Washington, D.C., retiring as Senior Vice President.During his work life, he served as a deacon and music leader in 14 churches, of which he helped start seven of them. Bill and Ruth performed as musicians at many weddings throughout the years and he enjoyed playing golf.After retiring, he moved to the family farm in Calvin, Oklahoma, prior to coming to Oklahoma City 12 years ago. He and Ruth joined Quail Springs Baptist Church where he was a deacon and led the music in Sunday school and at Wednesday evening services.He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters, and a son, Paul. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Ruth; two sons, Chuck and John; daughter-in-law, Pam; brother, Doug; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended relatives.A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held Friday, March 5, 2021, at 10 a.m. at Quail Springs Baptist Church.
