In Memory of a Life So Beautifully Lived
"Love You More"
Caroline Ruth (Adams) Luna passed away after a short illness on Oct. 15, 2014 at the "young age" of 72. She was born Sept. 5, 1942 to Dorothea May (Newell) Adams and Edgar William Adams at St. Anthony Hospital where she would later graduate with honors after passing her Nursing Board exams from their School of Nursing with a R.N. degree in Nov. 1967. Caroline did so well on her exams she received reciprocity nursing license privileges across the United States but remained here a lifelong proud "Okie". While attending St. Anthony's School of Nursing, a providential blind date introduced her to her future husband John David Luna and they were married on June 30, 1967 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral and celebrated 47 wonderful years together. Mother, a proud graduate of Harding High School (Class of 1961) always teased dad that she never knew if a "Flying Eagle" could marry and live with a rival John Marshall HS "Bear". They had two daughters: Linda Dorothea Luna and Lisa Margaret Luna both of Edmond who also were alas, JMHS graduates.
Caroline worked in Labor and Delivery where she was promoted to assistant head nurse. After 17 years, she left to go to Surgery (O.R.) at Saints for six years and then took some time off to care for ailing family members and her two school age children at home. "Mom's taxi" ran full time for several years as she ferried us back and forth to Science Fair, History Fair, Band and Orchestra concerts. She was a Girl Scout Leader and talented seamstress making outfits and costumes for drama, prom, and countless activities. Mom went back to her loved profession as a circulating nurse at Oklahoma Surgicare and loved working there until her retirement in 2006. She was always a compassionate nurturer and loved helping patients. She has made a great contribution to this world by delivering many babies and helping rebuild patient's lives through her dedicated work over the years. Mother loved the outdoors, especially Colorado, which she called "God's Country". Many family vacations were spent in Estes Park and in the Rocky Mountain National Park camping, hiking, fishing, wildlife watching, mineral and fossil collecting. Both she and father are avid rock hounds and active members of the Oklahoma Mineral and Gem Society where they further developed their passion for jewelry making, lapidary, and silver smithing. Mother was part Cherokee and embraced her Native American Ancestry with her love of nature and ancient languages and culture and taught herself how to do bead working. As a child she attended Pow Wows with her parents and was determined to instill this love of tradition and ancestry in her children as well. She was a good friend and listener who many called upon for advice. She had a quiet strength, calmness and peaceful serenity in the way she lived her life that many admired. Acutely intelligent about all topics from politics to science and nature and art; she could converse with anyone on any topic. She was a voracious reader (especially loving mysteries and thrillers). One of her favorite quotes was "wear the old coat, buy the new book". She worked crypto quotes, crossword puzzles, and sudokus in pen!! She enjoyed watching and feeding wildlife, especially the birds and squirrels at her house and would often comment on their playful antics. She wrote poetry and short stories and even had some columns and poems published over the years. She was witty and mischievous and loved a good joke and prank. Her smile was like sunshine and laughter was healing for her! Mother was a long time member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Her faith was unfailing even when she was ill she continued to pray and asked for her rosary and to receive the sacraments in her hospital bed. She taught her children to put God first and love all others. "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven". Ecclesiastes 3:1.
In addition to her devoted husband and precious daughters, she is survived by several beloved family members: her Uncle Calvin and Aunt Edith Adams of Mustang, OK, her stepsister Carol Nunnally, of Georgetown, TX, and her many cousins who since she was an only child were like sisters to her; Betty (Bruce) Hall, Jeanette (Gary) Canan, Marie (Barry) Stump, cousins Linda, Marilyn, and many more family (Riddles, Skinners, Dewards, Sides, and Palmers) and just as many friends and colleagues that were like family to her. The family designated the Wildlife rehabilitation center Wild Care in Noble, OK and Catholic Charities (catholic charities.org) as appropriate memorials to her.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church with a reception luncheon to follow.
