Daniel Michael O’Neil Jr., age 76, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024.
Michael was born on December 7, 1947, to Dan and Jeanne O’Neil. He grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Christ the King Grade School, Harding High School, Santa Clara University, and OU Law School.
A lifelong member of the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, you could often find him on the golf course or at the pool, throwing the ball with his family or anyone else who wanted to play. He was a friend to all and a fierce champion of the causes he believed in. Michael had a passion for sports, particularly squash, golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, volleyball, ping pong, and frisbee. He took pride supporting all the sports played by his children and grandchildren.
Michael was responsible for the longest running professional international squash tournament in the world. It ran longer than the British Open, and took place in his hometown of Oklahoma City.
A gifted athlete, attorney, artist and storyteller, Michael lived life to the fullest – and supported and celebrated family and friends like no other. His big energy brought joy to all those around him.
Michael was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dan and Jeanne. He is survived by his sister, Patty Kaiser (Chick), and his children Amy O’Neil, Bridget Foreman (Mark), Daniel O’Neil III (Jennifer), and Trinian Mitchell (Carson). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Erika, Dylan, Talon, Scoutleigh, Michael IV, Scotty and Violet.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the excellent care provided to Michael by Iris Memory Center, especially to Abena Anim, Kim Cable, and Kayla Carver.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of a great storyteller, please share your anecdotes and stories, which will be cherished by his family. These can be emailed to Amy at amy.oneil@gmail.com – the more colorful, heartfelt and outlandish the better!
A celebration of Michael will be held at a later date.
