Daniel Stough, M.D.

On June 9, 2010, our beloved Dan left this life he so loved in his home surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer. Anyone who knew him remembers his graciousness, his wonderful smile and, until the end, his strong handshake. He was the consummate true gentleman. Dr. Dan Stough was born August 27, 1934 in Geary, Oklahoma, the loving son of Alice Ross and Daniel Freeman Stough, M.D. He was the third generation in his family to practice medicine in Oklahoma. He was a graduate of Geary High School. After serving in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, he attended Oklahoma State University where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated from Central State College and the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine followed by an internship and one year Surgical Residency at St. Anthony's Hospital. His post-graduate residency was at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in the field of Neurosurgery. In 1973, he attained board certification in Neurological Surgery. He entered private practice, finishing his career with Neuroscience Specialists, PC. His commitment to medicine sustained him throughout his life. His retirement from medicine came only after his death. He was a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society, Rocky Mountain Neurological Society, Oklahoma County Medical Society, Oklahoma State Medical Association, Oklahoma City Clinical Society and the Osler Society. Dan was a founding member of the Robert M. Bird Society in support of the OUHSC Medical Library. During his professional career he was a Clinical Instructor at the University of Oklahoma Medical School, Chairman of Neurosurgery at Mercy Health Center, 1978 - 1983 and Chairman of Neurosurgery at Baptist Medical Center l982 - 1989. Dan was a faithful member of All Souls' Episcopal Church. His service to the church and his lifelong love of gardening were reflected in his care of the cloister and rose gardens. Dan's many passions included his family, collecting Native American pottery, Santa Fe, gardening, traveling and being with his many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of 52 years; their children Ross H. Stough and his wife Wendy of Nashua, N.H.; Sydney Stough Lackey and her husband, Hal V. "Trey" Lackey III of Alexandria, VA.; and Stanton S. Stough of Oklahoma City. His grandchildren are Katherine Nicole Stough, Daniel Ross Stough II and Hal V. "Boots" Lackey IV. He is also survived by his siblings, Joanne Stough Gwaltney and her husband, Robert of Yukon; Thomas R. Stough, M.D. and his wife, Rebecca Goen Stough, M.D. of Okarche, OK; and Jerry Stough of Manassas, VA., as well as many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the nursing staff at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital for their loving care. Dan leaves many loyal friends, as well as a dedicated staff who assisted him as he cared for his patients. His love of God, family and country, joy of life and dignity serve as an inspiration to those whose lives he touched.
