David L. Maloney

Friends and family are preparing to celebrate the life of David L. Maloney, 71, who passedaway on September 3,2012. A prayer service will be held at 7p.m. Sunday, September 9, at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home, 14624 N. May Avenue, in Oklahoma City. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10, at St. Eugene's Catholic Church, 2400 W. Hefner Road in Oklahoma City. Dave was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 11, 1941, to Edward and Mary Maloney, who emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. In sixth grade, Dave met his future wife, Roberta Hoffman, who sat next to him in class. While Roberta was focused on academic success, Dave was determined to be successful as a basketball player. A star in high school, Dave earned a basketball scholarship that made him the first person in his family to go to college. As the starting point guard at Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, he led the team to the 1962 NCAA Division II National Championship and scored more than 1,000 points in his career, with a highlight game of 49 points against American University. He and Roberta were married on June 15, 1963, and Dave went to work as head basketball coach and director of guidance and counseling at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Shamokin, PA. In 1973, he earned his master's degree in education and counseling. In 1975, he became head basketball coach at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The relationships he developed with his Carnegie Mellon players continued throughout his life, and Dave cherished the regular Arizona golf outings with a special group of former players. In 1984, Dave left coaching to head Carnegie Mellon University's alumni organization and then served as CMU's Vice President for Development. In 1993, Dave and Roberta came to Oklahoma, and Dave began a career with the University of Oklahoma. He served first as executive director of development at the OU Health Sciences Center, and then became OU's Vice President for Development. In that role, Dave led the University to a new level of fundraising success, with $1.26 billion in gifts and pledges recorded during his 12 years as vice president. Dave was personally honored in 2004 as Oklahoma's Outstanding Fundraising Professional by AFP, the American Fundraising Professionals organization. Dave was always a coach at heart and that defined the tremendous relationships he created with those who worked for him and with him. He genuinely cared about people; he treated everyone with respect and integrity; he had a sense of humor and spirit of fun that made working with him a joy; and he relished the opportunity to help people develop their potential. Following his retirement from OU in September 2006, Dave began a new career as a fundraising consultant, establishing strong and fruitful relationships with a wide range of organizations, including the Knights of Columbus' Center of Family Love in Okarche, St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, Oklahoma City Community College, and Cameron University in Lawton. Dave's family was his greatest source of joy. He was deeply devoted to his wife and lifelong best friend, Roberta, and to his beloved daughters, Denise Maloney and Kelly Lynch. Dave's son-in-law, Gary Lynch, was like a son to him, and his grandchildren, Michael and Sophia Lynch, were the lights of his life. He maintained strong ties to his brothers and sisters, Tom Maloney and Kay Maloney of Philadelphia and Ed Maloney of New Jersey. A lifelong Catholic, Dave's abiding faith was among his defining characteristics. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Matching Fund for Ross Hall. Checks for these memorial gifts can be made out to St. Eugene's Catholic Church with "In Memory of Dave Maloney" in the memo line and sent to the church at PO Box 20930, Oklahoma City, OK 73156.
