Edwina Lee Emerson Hargis

Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, and friend moved peacefully from her life on earth and into the arms of her Lord on August 24, 2015. Edwina Lee "Winnie" Hargis was born February 20, 1932, in Chickasha, OK. Winnie was a beautiful fountain of God's love and happiness and always brought joy, comfort, and encouragement to all around her. Winnie was the only child of Virginia Ikard Bird and Edward Brownwood Emerson. She grew up in Pampa, TX, with her aunt and uncle Edwina and Lynn Boyd. She attended Ursuline Academy in Dallas and went to college at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. While there, she met Roland Paul "Buck" Hargis. Winnie and Buck were married September 1, 1952, in Nogales, AZ. Buck's employment with Ethyl Corporation took them to Tulsa, Little Rock, Memphis, El Dorado, Oklahoma City, and Dallas, raising their seven children along the way. After Buck's death, Winnie moved back to Oklahoma City. Winnie was a devout Roman Catholic and always actively involved in her parish, most recently at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond. She especially enjoyed volunteering with the Time Out group, among other ministries. Until her retirement, Winnie was employed as an educational assistant at John Ross Elementary School in Edmond. Preceding Winnie in death are her parents, her husband, and her daughter Maria Hargis Bowen. She is survived by sons Paul (Terri), Steve (Mary Ellen), Larry, and Matt (Debe); daughters Ginny Messner (Dennis) and Lee Ann Brooks (Mark); and son-in-law Scott Bowen. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. We thank our sweet Winnie for her legacy of love and will celebrate her life with a Rosary at 1:30 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 on Saturday, August 29, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edmond, OK. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Time Out Program for Seniors at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
