Ernestine “Chris” LaFrance, a beloved educator and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully in Oklahoma City on April 14, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on February 7, 1945, in Oklahoma City, Chris lived a life defined by her deep passion for teaching and a commitment to nurturing the minds of young people.
Chris was a lifelong learner, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Oklahoma State University and a Master’s in Education from Northeastern State University. Her thirst for knowledge was matched only by her desire to impart that knowledge to others. A dedicated teacher, Chris inspired countless individuals throughout her career, focusing her efforts on mentoring and educating not only students in traditional classrooms, but also adult GED and at-risk students. A proud Democrat and politically active individual, she embraced diversity and inclusion, and she advocated for those who needed guidance and support. Chris devoted herself to causes that were close to her heart, including her work as a CASA advocate. Among many things, she served as a Girl Scout Counselor, Rainbow Girls advisor, and was recognized as a Master Gardener. Her fierce dedication to her community and her unwavering spirit shone brightly in all her endeavors.
Outside her professional achievements, Chris was a woman of many interests. She was an avid reader and crafter, and found joy in painting, embroidery, crocheting, card making and scrapbooking. Her creativity flourished as she took on various projects often seen as a true maker at heart.
Chris was a true fanatic for all sports, especially Oklahoma State athletics and Thunder basketball, but baseball was her true passion. She traveled to multiple games across the country. One such memorable adventure took her and her son, Terry, from Denver to Phoenix, where they cheered on their favorite baseball teams while creating lasting memories.
Family was paramount in Chris’ life. She was immensely proud of her three children. She felt they were her greatest accomplishments, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Chris’ home was always filled with love, especially during the holidays and festive gatherings—a testament to her generous spirit and welcoming nature.
Many fond memories surround Chris, from exhilarating road trips with her children, time spent in theme parks, and fun-filled craft conventions. She had a zest for life that was infectious, and her laughter often echoed through the rooms wherever she gathered with family and friends.
Chris leaves behind her loving children, Terry LaFrance, Lori (Ryan) LaFrance, and Stacie LaFrance, along with her brother, Robert Martin. She is reunited in spirit with her parents, JC and Sheba Gettys, her ex-husband C. Gary LaFrance, her brother Steve Martin, and his mother, Rheba Martin, all of whom she held dear.
The legacy of Chris LaFrance will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her kindness, sass, and fierce loyalty will be dearly missed, and her impact on the lives she touched will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held on April 17, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on April 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Both services will take place at Smith & Kernke Funerals & Cremations, located at 1401 NW 23rd St, Oklahoma City, OK. As we gather to celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman, we will remember her not just for her achievements, but for the love and warmth she shared with all.
