Frances Carmen Hurley, age 91. Fran was born January 6th 1921 to Manuel and Angelina Ucha in Pontevedra Spain. Fran came to the United States at the age of 6. She arrived on the 4th of July 1926 at Ellis Island with her Mother and brother Joe and headed to live in Chicago with her Father. She lived in Chicago Illinois with her family, graduating from Marshall High in Chicago. She met John Raymond Hurley Jr, who preceded her in death, while he was serving in the navy and married on October 27, 1945. Her children are: John Hurley III and wife Mary of Naples Florida, Joanne Hurley and husband Bryan Stanners of Chicago Illinois, Pat Leyser of Lansing Michigan, Timothy Hurley, who preceded her in death, Robert Hurley and his wife Kathleen of Farmington Hills Michigan, Mary Jane Fry and husband Dennis of Edmond Oklahoma, and Margaret Hinski and her husband Tom of Scottsdale Arizona. She was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Ucha. Her sister Marie Spehar of Livonia Michigan survives her. She leaves 13 grand children and 11 great grandchildren as well as 10 nieces and nephews. Frances was raised in Chicago during the depression. She worked in her father's tavern and helped raise her younger sister before meeting her navy man and starting life with him. Fran and Jack traveled across the Midwest for his work while accumulating a family of 7 children. Lots of happy moments occurred after school where the children were filled with fresh cookies and related their school news. While the day to day events of being a great mother are not exciting to relate, she raised good sons and independent daughters. She volunteered extensively and was always the person who met a new neighbor with a cake or brought dinner to a family in crisis. She loved traveling and visited England, Europe, South America, Australia, China, Canada and Mexico. She loved family and friends, playing cards, dancing and having a good time. A person totally in control of her life until the end she moved to Canterbury Apartments in 2011 and enjoyed meeting new people and staying busy. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 29, 2012 beginning at 3 p.m. followed by an evening prayer service at 7 p.m. at Smith & Kernke. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Eugene Catholic Church. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Wichita, KS.
