Frank Cameron Thompson died on December 3, 2024, in Oklahoma City from Alzheimer’s disease. He was lovingly cared for by his wife Carole Venard Thompson throughout and was surrounded by his wife and children at the end.
Frank was born in Oklahoma City on October 29, 1951, to Elizabeth Cameron Thompson and James William Thompson, Sr. He attended Harding and Edmond high schools and was a talented tennis player, winning a state championship. At age 17 he started dating the love of his life, Carole Jean Venard. After graduating from Edmond High School, he attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he studied geology, was a member of the tennis team and made many lifelong friends as a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He graduated from OU in 1974 and returned to Oklahoma City. After leaving OU, Frank entered the oil and gas industry where he worked as a petroleum geologist for more than four decades. He always looked forward to going to work and loved going out in the field on wells. Frank loved being a geologist and cherished the many enduring friendships he made throughout his career.
Frank and Carole were married in Oklahoma City on September 5, 1975. Frank was a devoted father to his three children and seized every opportunity to be a part of their lives. He coached several soccer and baseball teams for his children at Christ the King School and he was the Scout Master for Troop 120 for several years. He loved traveling, camping, hiking, fishing, and especially sailing on Lake Hefner. Frank could strike up a conversation with anyone; he truly never met a stranger. In recent years, he has treasured his role as a grandfather to his three grandsons.
He is survived by his wife Carole Venard Thompson, his children and their families: Cameron Thompson and his wife Sara Thompson and sons Graham and Leith; Jason Thompson and his wife Melissa Thompson; and Bonnie Thompson and her husband Andrew Manns and son Owen Manns, as well as his brothers James Thompson, Jr. and John Thompson, and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
Frank was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth Cameron Thompson and his father James William Thompson, Sr., his uncle and namesake Frank Leith Thompson, and Tyberia Brown, who helped raise him and his brothers after his mother passed away.
Frank’s family is grateful for the support of many friends and family that spent time with him in the last few years, as well as the staff of Heaven House who helped care for him in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, Frank’s family asks that donations be made to the Oklahoma chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Frank’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 3214 N Lake Ave. in Oklahoma City, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a burial at Frisco Cemetery, on 14200 W Britton Rd. in Oklahoma City, near the Venard family farm he loved so much.
