Louis E. Shultz known as Gene died happy and at peace in his home in Oklahoma City on June 7th at the age of 92. He is survived by his daughters, Vicki Duncan (Cary) of Cashion, Oklahoma, Carla Edwards of Phoenix, Arizona, and Sandra Kirk (Michael) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Gene has four grandchildren: Ryan Edwards, Kelsey Kirk, Grant Kirk, and Blaine Kirk. He is preceded in death by his lovely wife of 65 years, Jane Shultz; his parents Harold Shultz and Gustel Robinette Shultz: as well as his brother, Harold Shultz Jr. and his beloved sister, Helen Shultz McGee, who died much too young.
Gene was born March 21, 1923 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He graduated from Guthrie High School in 1940. He then served in WWII in the US Army where he received several honors. His reflections about serving in WWII as well as time abroad were very interesting to his family. He was proud to be a veteran. Gene's Honorable Discharge was from the 881st Field Artillery Battalion and his decorations include the WW II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon as well as two Bronze Service Stars.
Upon return from WWII, Gene was a senior at Oklahoma State University when he met Jane Brady. He was immediately taken with her and told her on the third date that he would marry her. Gene graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1949 with a Commercial Art Degree and he and Jane Brady were married shortly thereafter. Gene and Jane loved their time at Oklahoma State University and Gene had the privilege to study under Doel Reed while he was in college. Gene painted for many years; their home was filled with his artwork. In later years, he delighted his grandchildren with his horse drawings.
Gene had a distinguished career working for the Oklahoma State Department of Transportation in the office and in the field. He traveled all over the State securing the right-of-way that has created the highways and roads we know today. Following his retirement, he had a second career working with Coates Field Service.
Gene and Jane spent the early years of their marriage in Oklahoma City and Guthrie. However, his time in Guthrie living near his parents and his time in Cashion living on a ranch with his horses were his favorite. Like his father before him, Gene rode horses into his later years. He would go on trail rides and campouts that lasted several days with his cowboy friends. He loved animals especially his dogs and horses. In their senior years, Gene and Jane moved back to Oklahoma City and very much enjoyed living in the Lakehurst neighborhood.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Rose Hill Burial Park in Oklahoma City. Rev. Dave Poteet of St. Luke's United Methodist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Oklahoma State University Doel Reed Center of the Arts or the Coffee Creek Therapeutic Horsemanship Riding Center, 17 E.
