George D. "Sonny" Schroeder, 80, passed away September 8, 2012 in Oklahoma City. He was born on September 12, 1931 in Springfield, IL the oldest of 9 children to George A. and Laura Mae Schroeder. Sonny joined the army in 1951 and spent his enlistment driving tanks all over Germany. After he was discharged in early 1954 he made his way to Oklahoma City to work construction with his uncle. While in Oklahoma he met and later in 1954 married Joyce Kirby. Sonny worked as an ironworker. He worked his entire career in Oklahoma City for only three companies Allied Steel, Stamper, and Stoldt Stotts. As a young man in Illinois, Sonny enjoyed racing cars with his father that tradition was one that he carried on once he was settled in Oklahoma. Sonny was a home improvement kind of man, and not just changing light fixtures, but adding over 400 square feet to his and Joyce's home and a large detached garage. In that garage Sunny spent many hours working on projects, fixing things, and "teaching" his children and later his grandchildren and even a few neighbor kids. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mary Louise Hennessey and Roberta Cousin; brothers Jack Schroeder, Bennie Schroeder, and Donald Schroeder. He is survived by his wife Joyce; children David and wife Kari, Susan Schroeder; grandchildren Tanya, John, Jeremy, Aaron and Dagan; great grandchildren John Ryan, Valeska; brothers Jim and Joe Schroeder and sister Sarah Ruggles.
