George Wallace Coulter was born January 25, 1919, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Victor Y. Coulter and Gladys Rawlings Coulter. George died peacefully at St. Ann's Home in Oklahoma City on November 13, 2014. George's mother died tragically when George was 7 years old. His father later married Barbara Baird Coulter.
George graduated from high school at Hebron College & Academy, Hebron, NE, where he then received his Associate Degree in Arts and Science. He enlisted in the US Navy Air Force in 1942 and served on a Navy aircraft carrier in the South Atlantic Ocean near Argentina and sang with the US Navy Chorus. At the conclusion of the war, his ship docked in San Francisco where he met his future wife, Arlene Jean Winzenburg. They married in her home church in Waverly, Iowa, in May 1946, and were married for 64 years until her death in September, 2010. George and Arlene had two children: Cynthia Jean Coulter (1951-2013), and Timothy George Coulter (born 1955). They took special pride in their children's artistic talents: Tim, a singer, musician, and song writer. Cynthia, a widely exhibited sculptor and visual artist.
George joined Western Electric in Nebraska after his military discharge, transferring to Oklahoma in 1959. He worked for Western Electric as an industrial engineer until his retirement after 37 years of service. For many years, George and Arlene also owned a car wash on NW 10th Street which was operated as a family business. George had an extensive personal work shop where he enjoyed building things for their home and creating various unique inventions. He considered patenting many of them, but preferred designing something new, rather than laboring over applications for the patents.
The family especially loved travel adventures and spent 3 weeks every summer visiting relatives and friends all over the United States, while hiking, camping, and fishing.
George and Arlene were active members of Our Lord's Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir for over 30 years. Three years in a row, they won the annual talent show at Brighton Gardens Senior Living singing duets.
George was a proud American and continuous member of the American Legion Post #100 in Nebraska for over 68 years.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Arlene; his daughter, Cynthia; his parents and step-mother; his brother, Victor Coulter (Henrietta); sister-in-law, Florence Winzenburg Skully (Richard F.); and brother-in-law, Walter Winzenburg. He is survived by son, Timothy G. Coulter, Hollywood, CA; nephew, Dr. Herbert C. Coulter (Sharlene), Blair, NE; niece, Sharon Scully Williams (Max), Monument, CO; niece, Elaine Scully Mahrenholz (Joe), Panora, IA; and nephew, Brian Scully (Julie), Fairbanks, AK.
The family is especially grateful to Charlotte Ream Cooper, Business Manager, Geriatric Care Manager, and friend to George and Arlene for over 10 years and Tait Roberts, George's companion and activity planner during the past 7 months.
