Gwen DeGruy died peacefully at home on December 11, 2013 after a long struggle with COPD. She was 76 years old. Gwen was born on a farm in northwest Oklahoma on April 20, 1937. She married young and had three sons. She moved to Oklahoma City in the mid-seventies. During the Oklahoma oil boom, Gwen worked as an oil and gas land and title representative. Her job sent her to locations all across the United States. Although her first marriage ended, she later married her husband of 23 years, Ron DeGruy. They are members of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Gwen enjoyed volunteering weekly at her church until her health deteriorated, reading, talking on the phone, spending time with her family, and eating chocolate. Gwen is survived by numerous relatives and close friends including; her husband: Ron DeGruy; sons: Randy Wanzer (Shari) of Corn, OK, Ken Wanzer (Greg Dorn) of San Mateo, CA, Clark DeGruy (Judy) of Eufaula, OK, Vincent DeGruy (Linda) of Fort Worth, TX and Jason DeGruy of Arlington, TX; sisters: Joan Sandberg (Scott) of Portland, OR, Mary Barr of Parson, KS and Carol Vaverka of Parson, KS; brother: David Pospisil of Bison, OK; grandsons: Jared Wanzer of Oklahoma City, OK and Sean Wanzer (Joni) of Norman, OK. She is preceded in death by her son Stephen Wanzer, her sister Jan Dickstein, and her parents Frank and Irene Pospisil. She will be missed by many and will be remembered for her love for her family, her humor, candor, and loving and caring heart. There will be an Evening Prayer Service for Gwen and her family at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 6:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, Gwen actively supported the YWCA for Battered Women.
