Hannibal K. "Pancho" Shadid fell asleep in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 15, 2010 after a 1 ½ year battle with prostate cancer. He was born December 1, 1921 in Caddo, Texas to Khairallah J. and Noha Homsey Shadid. In 1925, his family moved to Oklahoma City where he has been a lifelong resident. He grew up in Oklahoma City going to public schools. In 1939, during his senior year at Central High School, he enlisted in the army with the 45th infantry division. He served during WWII and was later transferred to the 744th MP battalion serving as Sergeant of the Guard, expert marksman and firearms instructor, telecommunications installer, and military intelligence. He was accompanied almost all the way with his favorite pet dog and the battalion's mascot "Skip", until he shipped out to the South Pacific. Upon honorable discharge from the army, he returned to Oklahoma City and earned his High School Diploma. In 1946, he and his brother Khairy opened a small beer tavern at Main and Blackwelder named "Pancho's Bar" from which he got his nickname "Pancho". On January 20, 1952, he married the love of his life Helen Joyce Saffa, from Sherman, Texas. Together they raised three wonderful children. Early on they traveled from California to Florida and Michigan to south Texas, where he was the produce buyer for his business with his sister Otilia and brother-in-law Bob Horner. On September 1, 1959, when the state of Oklahoma legalized alcohol, he opened one of the first liquor stores at the Public Market near downtown Oklahoma City called Market Liquors. On December 1, 1971 he moved his location and opened "Pancho's Liquortown at the corner of NW Expressway and Meridian, and together with Joyce owned and operated it continuously to the present. He is a lifelong member of St. Elijah Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church where he began his service as one of the first altar boys for his uncle they Very Reverend Shokrallah J. Shadid. As an adult he served the church for many years in different positions including convention chairman, parish council treasurer and President and for many years as one of the original custodians of the "Flowers That Do Not Wither Fund" that he helped create. Besides being the ultimate caregiver for his family, his joys were his wife of 58+ years and being together with his family. He had a love for the game of golf and played until he was physically unable to do so. He is preceded in death by his parents K. J. and Noha Shadid, his brother Khairy K. Shadid, a beloved niece Pamela Sue Shadid, his sister Otilia Horner and her husband Bob all of Oklahoma City, brother E. B. Homsey and his wife Myrtle of McPherson, Kansas, sister-in-law Lillian Saffa of Sherman, Texas. He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Brenda and her husband Kendal Wilson, son Dr. Tad Shadid and his wife Debbie, son Dr. Jeff Shadid and his wife Renae, grandchildren Brent Shadid Wilson, twins, Nicole Lynae and Nathan Cole Shadid and Laney Shadid Wagoner, Sister, Babe Knouse, Sister-in-law Alena Shadid, all of Oklahoma City, sister-in-law Mary Moses, brother-in-law Tom Saffa Jr. of Sherman, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews and more friends than anyone can imagine, and his special little girl "Maddie". The family would like to give special thanks to all of the Orthodox Clergy for all their prayers and spiritual nurturing to Pancho and the entire family, the Doctors, Nurses, and Caregivers of The Oklahoma Heart Hospital and the Integris ProCure Cancer Treatment Center.
