Harvey Charles Mackie, 82, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011. He was born to Ophelia Lee and Harvey Cecil Mackie on Dec. 21, 1928, in Campbellton, Texas, and moved to Oklahoma City with his family a few years later. He attended Taft Junior High and Central High Schools, and the University of Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was assigned to bases in Germany and Tokyo as well as several Army posts in the U.S. After being discharged from the Army, he moved to Washington, D.C., and worked in several U.S. government agencies, eventually retiring from the U.S. Department of Education. While in Washington he founded The Shakespeareans, a community theater troupe that performed works by William Shakespeare. Later he became director of drama for the Mount Vernon Players of Washington. The Players, sponsored by the historic Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, specialized in works by Shakespeare, Moliere, Shaw, Agatha Christie, Noel Coward and other noted playwrights. He served the Players for 23 years, directing four or more productions annually. In the fall of 2001 he and his wife moved to Oklahoma City and became members of the Oklahoma City Theatre Company, where he performed. In the fall of 2008, OCTC presented his adaptation of "Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervllles." In the fall of 2009, he directed Noel Coward's comedy "Blithe Spirit" for OCTC. He also performed with Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park and the Poteet Theatre. He was a volunteer at the Civic Center Music Hall and won their coveted Volunteer of the Year Award for the 2002-2003 season. He was a lector at Christ the King Catholic Church, and active in the church's Senior Adult Ministry. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna Lee and Lewis Luckan, and his niece, Carol Lynn Kessinger. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Louise, of Chicago; his wife, Donna; niece Corann and husband Charlie Zimmerman; great nieces Cynthia Cox and husband Douglas Holsted, and Lory and husband David Martin; great-great niece Diana Holsted, and great-great nephews Christian Holsted and Alex and Jonathan Martin. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 at Smith & Kernke from 4 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8005 Dorset Dr. in Nichols Hills, with the Rev. Rick Stansberry officiating, followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. Alan S. Bock and Dr. Matthew McBride and their dedicated staffs, as well as the loving caregivers at Manor Care Health Services and Hospice of Oklahoma County.
