Hazel Hanvey Spradlin, aged 94, passed away at her home in Edmond on January 11, 2016. She was born March 5, 1921, at home in Griggs, Cimarron County, Oklahoma, to William and Bessie Fansher Hanvey. Her parents, her husband William H. Spradlin, her son Stephen Spradlin and grandson Scott Kinzer Spradlin preceded her in death. Her sister Gertrude Williams, and her brothers Robert, Albert, and Donald Hanvey also predeceased her.
Hazel is survived by her children LaVonne Selph, Ed and Carol Spradlin, Evelyn and Dale Gray all of Edmond, and Denton Spradlin of Oklahoma City; her sister Helen Martin of Edmond and brother, Arthur Hanvey of Beaver. She is also survived by her grandchildren Grant and Donna Selph of Keyes; Aaron Selph and Karen Blevins of Edmond; Julia Selph of Edmond; Perry Spradlin of Seward, Alaska; Zac Gray of Boulder, Colorado; and Megan Spradlin of Edmond as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Hazel married William H. Spradlin on June 1, 1940, and they farmed and ranched much of their life in Cimarron County. After retirement, Hazel and William moved to Arizona for several years before moving to Oklahoma City in 2003 to be near their children. Hazel and Bill were square dancers and travelers. They also enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing cards and other games with family and friends. In the last years of her life, Hazel lived very happily with her daughter Evelyn, and she enjoyed marathon sessions of playing cards, dominoes and Rummikub.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, January 16, in the Chapel at Smith & Kernke, 14624 North May, Oklahoma City. The family has requested that friends who wish to make a memorial donation do so to the First Baptist Church, Keyes, OK 73947.
