Jane Garrett was born on October 29, 1937 in Oklahoma City to Otto (Tommy) and Helen Thompson. She was a graduate of Northeast High School and the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, Alpha Lambda Delta and Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She received the Bronze Letzeiser Award. She married Robert Dale Garrett on August 25, 1961 at Saint Luke's Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. She was the proud mother to Elizabeth Garrett, the first female president of Cornell University and Laura Garrett who is a faculty member at Tulsa Community College. Later, she returned to the University of Central Oklahoma to obtain a Masters Degree as a reading specialist. She provided many hours of tutoring to her students who struggled with learning disabilities. Jane was most proud of her two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Gruntmeir, an orchardist at Fishkill Farms in Beacon, New York and Robert Gruntmeir who is a freshman at the University of Southern California.The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Elizabeth Garrett History Scholarship at the University of Oklahoma Foundation.
