Hugh was born August 8, 1926 in Bay City, Texas and passed away on December 18, 2016 after a brief illness so he could celebrate Christmas in heaven with his wife. Hugh was a Southern Baptist minister, educator, musician, administrator and faithful servant for more than 65 years at churches in Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, and Oklahoma. He lived a Christ centered life which was kind, compassionate, gentle and caring. He was an Officer in the US Navy serving as a Lt JG on the aircraft carrier USS Essex during the Korean War. He received a BA in Naval Sciences at the University of Texas, and then continued his studies at Baylor University, later earning a Master's degree in Religious Education and Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Hugh met his wife of 55 years, Ida Jo Simpson, while serving as the Minister of Music, and she as the pianist, at their church in Nashville. God blended their talents perfectly throughout their lives. Hugh was a leader and wise counselor to his family, fellow staff members, church members and friends over the years. He never wavered in his beliefs and his genuine class and integrity shined through in every aspect of his life. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son and brother to his loving family. Hugh was preceded in death by his wife Jo, his parents, and two sisters and is survived by daughter Lisa Knowlton (Deke), son Allan (Jeanne); grandchildren Trace, Connor, Sean, Madeline, Dillon, Jackson and Kameron; his sisters Paula Barcik & Carol Peterson and his nieces and nephews. We will celebrate Hugh's life on Thursday, December 22 with a burial at Memorial Park at 10am and a memorial service to follow at Village Baptist Church at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to The Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma.
