Jack L. Coffey

Jack L. Coffey, Pharm D., our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend died on January 15, 2020. Jack was born in Vanoss, Oklahoma on May 20, 1935 to Woodrow and Alice (Cranford) Coffey. He grew up in Roff, OK and graduated from Roff High School in 1952. It was during his senior year that he met the love of his life, Fran Davis. After graduation, Jack attended the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and graduated with a degree in Pharmacy in 1957. During the time that Jack was at OU, he continued to date his high school sweetheart Fran, who graduated from Oklahoma State University. Even bedlam couldn't keep them apart. Jack and Fran were married in Roff, Oklahoma on August 11, 1956. They lived in Norman while Jack completed his pharmacy and ROTC training at the University of Oklahoma while Fran taught school in Oklahoma City during that year. After Jack graduated, he was stationed at Sculthorpe Air Force Base and they lived in nearby Blakeney, England. He served from 1959-1961 as a Captain in the Medical Services Corp where he served as director of the base hospital. During the course of their deployment, they developed a love for travel that carried them to 17 countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, and the Holy Land. After Jack completed his service commitment, he and Fran settled in Shawnee Oklahoma, their home for more than 40 years, where they had two daughters, Allyson and Catherine. He eventually acquired corporate ownership in five pharmacies in the Shawnee area and also served as a Consultant Pharmacist for three local nursing homes and as the Director for Pharmacy at Shawnee Regional Hospital. Beyond his business undertakings, Jack was dedicated to his profession. He was appointed to three terms on the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy and served as the President and Chairman of the Board of the American College of Apothecaries. He was the first Oklahoman to serve on the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education, serving for twelve consecutive years. Jack's commitment to his profession and his love of teaching and mentoring young professionals that brought him back to the OU College of Pharmacy as Assistant Dean and Clinical Associate Professor (1996-2002) where he served as the Director of Experiential Programs. In 2002, he became the Assistant Dean for External and Professional Affairs and assumed administrative oversight of the College of Pharmacy Program at OU-Tulsa and continued in that role until he retired from the College in 2010. Jack received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the Pharmacy profession, including The Ralph D. Bienfang Outstanding Practitioner Award (1981), the A.H. Robins Bowl of Hygeia (1982), Merck Sharp Dohme Outstanding Service Award (1982), numerous Memorial Awards from the American College of Apothecaries (1983, 1993, 1999), the National Pharmacy Preceptor Award (1987), NARD Independent Pharmacist Award (1988), National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Distinguished Service Award (1993-94), OU College of Pharmacy Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award (2001), OU College of Pharmacy Alumni Association Special Service Award (2004), and the American College of Apothecaries Dean's Recognition Award (2006). He also was extensively involved in his community, serving as a member or in a leadership role in numerous civic organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and Jaycees. He served as a City Councilman in Shawnee, a member of the Shawnee Industrial Development Authority, and Advisory Boards for Oklahoma Baptist University and St. Gregory's College. He was named Rotarian of the year in 1975 and Shawnee Business Person of the Year in 1994.Jack is survived by daughters Allyson Coffey (Cyndi) and Catherine Coffey Ross (Chris), beloved grandchildren Madison and Jackson Ross, brother Ken Coffey (Lisa), nephew Casey Coffey (Corin), sister-in-law Barbara Pybus, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families.
