Former City Council member Jacqueline Love Carey died on Monday, October 25, 2010 in Oklahoma City. She was 81 years of age. Jackie was born on January 28, 1929 in Evanston, Illinois to Margaret Rumbaugh and Wenzel John Love. She attended Evanston Township High School and Northwestern University where she studied physical education and soon married William Vincent Carey of Chicago in 1948. Residing in Oklahoma City for over 42 years, Jackie was a devoted wife, active mother of six children with fifteen grandchildren, girls basketball coach, club tennis champion, avid golfer and `professional' volunteer. Jackie served as the president of the Junior League of Oklahoma City, regional director and vice president of the Association of Junior Leagues of America, president and board member of the United Way of Central Oklahoma, president and board member of the Arts Council of Oklahoma City, board member of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and founding director and president of Leadership Oklahoma City. Turning her attention to government, Jackie served on the Oklahoma City Planning Commission from 1979 to 1984 when she was elected to the City Council and served the people of Ward 8 until her retirement in 1995. Among her many shared accomplishments are the passage of the Liquor by the Drink referendum, the Myriad Gardens, and the MAPS master plan. During this time, Jackie also served the private sector as the executive director of the Allied Arts Foundation and Children's Medical Research. Among her many awards for leadership and public service was her induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1984.Jackie is survived by her children, Margaret Carey and husband, R.D. Folsom of Arlington, VA, William V. Carey, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Jane Carey Wheeler and husband, Steve of Encinitas, CA, Ruth Carey and husband, Chris of Oklahoma City, Kevin Carey and wife, Claire of Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Carey Billante and husband, Frank of San Francisco, CA; her grandchildren, Emily Folsom Fernandez, Eliot Folsom, Kyle Folsom, Philip Carey, Brian Carey, Laura Carey Duprez, Ellen Carey, Paige Cleveland, Elizabeth Magann Katherine Vaughn, Carolyn McLean, Davis Carey, Jane Carey, Emma Carey, Alessandra Billante, Gianluca Billante; and her great grandchildren, Miles Duprez, Nolan Fernandez, and Baby Carey on the way. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
