Jean (Ash) Amick

Jean Ash Amick was born on September 19, 1922, and went to her reward in Heaven on March 25, 2017, at the age of 94. Born in Cordell, Oklahoma, she was the third child of Gertrude B. (Harlow) and Ara R. Ash. Jean began elementary school in Enid, Oklahoma. After a two-year stay in Enid, her family moved to Weatherford, then returned to Cordell, where she finished elementary and high school. Upon graduation from Cordell High School, Jean began her college education at William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri. She then attended a year at OCW in Chickasha, OK, before moving back to Cordell, where she went to work for Oklahoma Natural Gas Company. After a short time with ONG in Cordell, she was transferred to the ONG office in Oklahoma City. She soon decided she wanted to continue her study in piano and was accepted by the University of Oklahoma School of Music where she studied piano under Professor Lytle Powell and accompanied Vocal Professor, Joseph Benton. While at OU, she was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Iota (Alpha Iota Chapter) and in December, 1948, Jean completed a Bachelor of Performance in Piano from OU. Also, while in Norman, she was introduced by a mutual friend to a law student named John M. "Jack" Amick. Four months later, the two were married at the 10th and Francis Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. The two newlyweds soon moved to Medford, Oklahoma, where Jack was elected Grant County Attorney. Medford school needed an additional teacher, so Jean was urged to take a job teaching English and Music at Medford school. She produced several small music groups who performed very well in competitions they entered. One trio performed so well that a local TV station at the time invited them to come and perform on the air. While living in Medford 4 children were born, Douglas, Martin, Margaret and Linda. In 1959, Jack received an opportunity to work in Oklahoma City, so they moved to Oklahoma City soon after Linda was born. In 1963, Alan was born in Oklahoma City. Jean was an active member at the Mayfair Church of Christ for over 57 years, and quickly became involved in several organizations in Oklahoma City. The SAI Alumnae Chapter, from which she received the Sword of Honor, Rose of Honor, and the Alumnae Leadership Award. She was also a member of the PTA, Civic Music and the Oklahoma County Bar Auxiliary. She appeared in several productions at the Lyric Theater and she starred in the production of "Solid Gold Cadillac" at the Jewel Box. Jean instilled a love for music to all 5 children. All 5 children took piano lessons from her at one time or another, and each child learned to sing as well. Jean developed a reputation as an accompanist, and accompanied many of her children and their friends in band, orchestra and vocal contests. To supplement the household income, Jean taught piano lessons in their home for many, many years. She also received certification as a legal secretary and did typing for Holloway Dobson Hudson Bachman, and several other law firms. Jean will be remembered for her effervescent personality, her beautiful smile, beautiful handwriting, her love of music, her faith in God, and a splendid sense of humor. Jean was predeceased by her parents, A.R. and Gertrude Ash, brother, A. Russell Ash, Jr,. and sister, Ellen Scheer. Jean is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Judge John M. Amick; son, Douglas M. Amick of Bozeman, Montana; son and daughter-in-law, Martin S. and Callie Amick of Bermuda; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret E. and Steve Giacomini of Fairfield, Iowa; daughter, Linda K. Dodson of Oklahoma City; son and daughter-in-law, Alan R. and Jill Amick of Boulder, Colorado. She is also survived by six wonderful grandchildren, two nieces and a host of friends. A memorial service will be held to honor and remember Jean on Saturday morning, April 22, 2017, at 10:00am, at Mayfair Church of Christ, 2340 N.W. 50th, Oklahoma City.
