Jo Ann Gross Wine, M.D., a retired pediatrician, passed away on September 20, 2016, at the age of 76 in Oklahoma City after a 30-year fight with breast cancer. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 30, 1939 to parents Josephine and Jewell Prentice Gross. She graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, and then earned her Doctorate of Medicine from Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1966. She completed an internship and her Pediatric Residency at Los Angeles County General Hospital where she met Charles Joseph Wine. They were married in 1969 and moved to Chicago, where Joe completed his ear, nose, and throat residency at the Illinois Eye and Ear Hospital. Jo Ann completed her Fellowship in Ambulatory Pediatrics and was an Assistant Director of the Pediatric Clinics at the University of Illinois. In 1971, they moved to Oklahoma City to begin practice and start a family. Joe joined the Oklahoma City Clinic and Jo Ann was appointed Director of the Pediatric Clinics at Children's Hospital of Oklahoma, OUHSC. A little more than a year later, their first daughter, Elizabeth, was born. Three years after that, their second daughter, Kimberly, was born. Jo Ann served as a consulting Medical Director of the Oklahoma City Public Schools for 11 years, and also served for seven years as a pediatrician at the Oklahoma City Clinic on a part-time basis. She stopped to care for her mother for six years, but then returned to work as Director of the General Pediatric Clinics at Children's Hospital at OUHSC in 1993, retiring in 2004. She truly enjoyed teaching the residents and being in her clinic. In March 2016, she and her husband were recognized and received their 50th year pin from the Oklahoma County Medical Society for service to Oklahoma patients. She was very active in her church, becoming an ordained Elder at the Covenant Presbyterian Church. She also served as choir chaplain, worked on the prayer committee, served on the session for two terms and chaired the Worship and Arts committee. In 2008, she and Joe joined St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and both have served as President of their Upper Room Sunday School Class. She also was a member of the ladies needlepoint committee, and was one of 23 ladies who created large kneeler cushions with cathedral themes. She noted that she was the first one to complete the project. She loved prayer and served on that committee for the church, as well as being a member of the Congregational Care Committee. She always said she was most proud of three things: her medical degree, her marriage, and her family. More recently, she was blessed by having the friends in her Bible Study Class, who were a great support during her last fight with breast cancer. Her best support and love came from her husband of 47 years, and their two daughters – theirs was a very close and loving family. Her hobbies were quilting and needlepoint. She is preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles J. Wine; her elder daughter, Elizabeth Wine Conrad and son-in-law, Lee Conrad, of New York City; and her younger daughter, Kimberly Ann Wine, of Atlanta. She wishes to thank her long-time oncologists, Dr. Ralph Ganick, Dr. David Lam, and Dr. John Taylor, as well as all of the chemotherapy nurses at St. Anthony's Hospital and the staff at Frontier Hospice for their wonderful care and understanding. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, at 11am on Monday, September 26.
