Joan "Jody" Harris passed away November 7, 2018, just shy of her 81st birthday which would have been December 19th. She was born in Oklahoma City to James Tipton and Julia (Austin) Edwards in 1937. At the age of nine, after loss of her mother to cancer, Jody lived with her Aunt and Uncle, Olivia and Art Simon and her cousin William "Bill" Whitten. A few years later, her father married Berta Mae Brightwell. Upon their marriage Jody gained a younger sister, Connie. Jody attended Classen High School and was in the first graduating class from Northwest Classen. Majoring in Art with a French minor Jody attended Oklahoma A&M (now OSU) in Stillwater. As a member of Pi Beta Phi, Jody involved herself in many campus activities and fundraisers. A highlight of her college life was winning the title of Dairy Princess for the state of Oklahoma. After her time in Stillwater, Jody attended Oklahoma City University to pursue a degree in Secretarial Science.
She was a devoted and loving mother to her sons, Keith and John. Her professional career was as an executive secretary in the oil and gas industry where she was highly respected and relied upon for her skilled writing abilities. Jody was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian church. As a member of the Genesis group, she devoted countless hours to many charitable activities. In her spare time, Jody had an eye for decorating and prided herself in keeping a stylish and inviting home for entertaining. She was a skilled scrabble player, oil painter, and ceramic hobbyist. Additionally, as an integral member of The Alliance (social group) Jody fulfilled many roles including club president.
Jody is survived by her sons, Keith "Andy" Harris and John G. Harris; Keith's wife, Rebecca; grandchildren, Nathan Harris and Holly Harris; brother, James T. Edwards and wife, Merica, Nephews Tim, Jeff and Scott; sister, Connie Scharbor, nephews Jim and Kevin; cousin, William Whitten his wife Nancy and daughters Debbie and Susie. The Harris family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Jody's friend and caretaker Caroline Sullivan for her generous care for Jody over the last few years.
Jody will be remembered for her bright smile and loving spirit, she will be missed dearly by her loved ones.
