Born to Emma and Carter Powell January 24, 1937, in Okmulgee Oklahoma, John died August 19, 2013, of MDS Disease. Preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Jerry Powell, of Edina, MN, John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marcia and their children, Shea Powell Morris and husband Brett Morris of Pacific Palisades, California, Conner Powell and wife Lisa of Oklahoma City. Also he leaves four grandchildren, all of whom loved their "JP" and thought he was the BEST!!: Carter and Avery Morris, Caroline and Carson Powell. He is survived by his brother-in-law Michael Hopping of Baton Rouge LA. and cousin Beverly Brown of Oklahoma City. John has a sister-in-law Jacqui Powell, niece Kathy Powell-Larson and nephew Stephen Powell in Edina, Minnesota.
John grew up in Oklahoma City attending Hawthorne, Taft and Classen High School and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 with a Bachelors degree in Business. He enjoyed the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity to which he belonged. Following graduation John began a 35 year career in the banking industry including 20 years with the First National Bank and Trust Company and was active in the Oklahoma Bankers Association. Most recently John worked in the commercial real estate business following 10 years with the FDIC.
John was active at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help where he and his family belonged for nearly 50 years. John served on the Finance Committee, Building Committee, and in many varied ministries and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He generously supported the Arts and charitable organizations, serving as the Arts Festival Co-Chairman in 1982 and was a board member for United Cerebral Palsy.
The family would like to acknowledge, with deep gratitude, the help and care of the Oncology Department, Doctors and Nurses of St. Anthony Hospital, as well as the kindness and compassion of Mercy Hospice and Ludean Hyteche.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 3214 N. Lake, Oklahoma City.
