John was born on June 25, 1938 in Fletcher, Oklahoma the son of Earle and Lovell Merritt. He transitioned from this life on September 14, 2014 in Oklahoma City. John attended Oklahoma City University until graduating in 1968 with his law degree. A man of many talents he was an investigator, ventriloquist, magician, song writer and a dance instructor before becoming a prominent and nationally acclaimed attorney. He married the love of his life 45 years ago, Carolyn Emmerson. He raised two sons, Michael and David Emmerson and doted on his six grandchildren. His life was one dedicated to service and commitment. His kindness and inherent goodness touched all those who knew him. His wit, intelligence and courage were a source of daily inspiration. He is sorely missed by those fortunate enough to be family and friends. He was a member of the Church of Christ. John is survived by his wife Carolyn of the home; two step sons; Michael and wife Tracy Emmerson of Portland, Oregon; their children, Tristan, Cody, Tyler and Blake Emmerson; David Emmerson and Teresa Emmerson of Oklahoma City; their children, Madison and Brandon Emmerson; one brother and sister-in-law, General Jack and Rosemary Merritt; and one sister, Barbara Merritt. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Oklahoma Bar Foundation, P.O. Box 53036, Oklahoma City, OK 73152. Memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, September 19, 2014 at Smith and Kernke Chapel.
