John Michael Schantz

John Michael Schantz was born October 15, 1946, in Hobart, OK to Ernest and Bea Schantz. He grew up in Frederick, OK and graduated from Frederick High School as Valedictorian. Through high school he led the music at the Spanish Mission in Frederick, where his father preached. John went to OU to study music education. He played the saxophone in the OU Pride Marching Band. After graduating from OU, he joined the Army Reserves and took a position teaching choral music in Jr. and Sr. High School at Purcell, OK. In 1973, he married Melanie Mantooth and they moved to Durant, OK, where they both taught music. John often led music at FBC Durant. He and Melanie had two children at Durant. After teaching a few years, John went back to school at Southeastern OK State University to get his accounting degree. He passed the CPA exam on his first try and they moved to OKC where he went to work for Tom Daxon, State Auditor. After working for several auditing firms, John finished his career as controller for the Baptist Foundation of OK. He worked there for 17 years.While in Oklahoma City, John led the music at Highland Hills Baptist Church. Later John was an active member of Quail Springs Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir, served as a deacon, and taught Sunday School.He is survived by his wife of 48 years; his daughter, Jenifer Elaine Sparks and her husband, Harvey; son, Mark Andrew Schantz; 5 grandchildren; and his brother, James Schantz.Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2022, at Quail Springs Baptist Church. With burial to follow at 3:00pm at Hobart Rose Cemetery in Hobart, OK.Memorial gifts may be given to Quail Springs Baptist Church.
