John Albert Munneke, M.D., D.D.S,, or affectionately known as Doc, a Believer, husband, dad, Papa Doc, brother and incredible friend is now at Home with his Lord Jesus. John was born March 28,1947 and passed away unexpectedly October 5, 2024. John spent his early years in Tulsa with his late parents, Albert and Zelma. He received his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and then received his dental degree from Baylor University Dental School. He pursued his true calling by entering University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. During that time he met and married his bride of 49 years, Barbara Lippert Munneke. They have two outstanding sons, John Erick and Andrew.
John took a robust approach to everything in his life: concentrated piano training for 12 years, attending sons’ baseball and other sports, participating in multiple Bible studies, running, skiing on water or snow, playing tennis, sporting clays, and working out. John had the spiritual gift of giving. His generosity was probably only known fully by him and the Lord; that’s the way he wanted it. He generously provided free medical care/advice to many.
John and Barb constantly opened their home to family and many friends including K-Life groups, prayer groups, Bible studies. John loved taking in K-Life kids who just needed a temporary family or a tangible spiritual outpouring of God’s grace. John was quick to bless others with what he’d received from the Lord, and always with a quiet, humble heart.
John was a brilliant man. As a physician he served patients through family practice, workman’s compensation and pain management. He constantly researched what was new and promising in medicine to find effective ways to help those in need. While answering a question he would cite the medical benefit, often at the cellular level, which of course, we all understood! John loved practicing medicine right up until his last week of life. His wonderful, loyal staff was his extended family. We’re so very grateful for all they added to his life and to that of his patients.
John is survived by his loving wife, Barb, son John Erick (Cassi), Nia and Cade of Oklahoma City; son Andrew (Raelyn), Asher, August and Norah of Fayetteville, AR; sisters-in-law Teresa (Marty) Schardt of Fort Worth, TX and Linda (David) Alaback of Tulsa, eight nieces and nephews and their families and many loved cousins.
