John Richard Mackey passed away Monday, September 27, 2010. Born in Houston, TX on February 18, 1935, John had been a resident of Edmond, OK since 1973. John graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City in 1953. He then attended Oklahoma A&M for three years before enlisting in the United States Army where he served in Germany from 1956 to 1959. After his military service, John attended Oklahoma State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in business in 1961. After graduating from OSU, John remained a loyal supporter of the university and OSU athletics. All things OSU remained a passion for the remainder of his life. On June 15, 1963, John married Karen Sue Kentner.
John was in the insurance industry for 49 years. He had been with INSURICA (North American Group) since 1971. He always kept the needs of his customers in the forefront of his duties. His customers always knew if he was on the job, they didn't have to be concerned, as he was known to preach the need to always do things correctly and properly and he wouldn't allow anyone to be less than their best. John was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of America and the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Oklahoma City, and was an associate member of the Association of General Contractors, Municipal, Building, and Heavy and Utility Division. He was past president of the local Surety Underwriters Association and Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Oklahoma City. He served on various committees of the City of Edmond Planning Commission, National Association of Credit Management – Board Member, and as a volunteer for numerous civic organizations. He was a wonderful husband, daddy, grandad, friend and colleague. He was an honest and genuine man who had a big heart and would do anything for anybody. John was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Kapp Mackey and Adele Thomas Mackey, and brothers Robert and George. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen, and their children: son Douglas Kapp Mackey and his wife Carla, son Richard Lewis Mackey and his wife Susan, and daughter Melinda Jane Mackey Taylor and her husband Brian. Also, grandchildren: Hannah Taylor, Samantha Mackey, Garrett Mackey, Mackenzie Taylor, Adam Mackey, and Grady Mackey. He is also survived by sister, Helen Reier, sisters-in-law, Ann Spies and Jane Wheeler, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John will be greatly missed by his family, his colleagues, clients and thousands of friends across the world. He was truly a special person and a friend to many. John touched the lives of many people and will be long remembered. He was much loved and will be missed terribly…always carried in our hearts, never forgotten.
