Joy was born October 11th, 1925 in Denver, CO. She was raised in Gunnison, Colorado and Denver and educated in Gunnison and attended the University of Denver and graduated from Western State College in Gunnison.
During high school in Gunnison, she was a member of the Rainbow Girls and was elected the May Day Sweetheart of Gunnison and the State of Colorado. While at college, she was elected Miss Western State and was a member of the Sigma, Sigma, Sigma sorority.
In 1946 Joy married Lee A.S. Garland and moved to Oklahoma City as a young bride.
Lee and Joy were very active in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City. They both sang in the choir for over 20 years and were active in every phase of the church.
Joy served in the Junior Hospitality Club and was president in 1954, the first year the Follies were first presented. Another lifetime club Joy served in was the Kiwanis Club which she joined in 1946 and served as president 4 times.
Joy served in many other clubs over the years including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Muscular Dystrophy and others. In 1993, she was honored by the Oklahoma Hospitality Club for her service as a "Lady in the News".
A dedicated wife and mother, she helped raise 3 children and also helped her husband Lee in his business, Garland's Nurseries.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Lee A. S. Garland who was her husband of 47 years. By 2 infant sons; their beloved son, Scott Hudson and daughter, Janalee; her parents, Janet and Gomer Dollard and her brother, Robert.
She is survived by her son, Ted Garland; beloved granddaughters, Brittany and Bailey, Stevie Lee, Hillary and Heather; grandson, Hudson and great-granddaughter, Kimmy as well as numerous other great-grandkids.
Joy will be remembered for her beautiful white hair and her always present smile.
Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Memorial Park Cemetery.
