Kenneth Eugene 'Kenneth E. "Sugar" Smith Smith

Kenneth Eugene "Sugar", 70, passed away August 24, 2010 in Oklahoma City after a brave battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Sugar was born on July 11, 1940 to Lewis and Florene Smith in Robinson, Illinois. He spent his childhood in Neodesha, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Air Force, was stationed in Iceland, and honorably discharged in 1964. Sugar joined the Oklahoma City Police Department after his service in the Air Force in 1964. Throughout his 24 years on the force he was privileged to be involved in many organizations. He was a very dedicated detective and was the spokesperson for Crime Stoppers. Sugar was fortunate to have many opportunities to serve the state. His security detail included numerous celebrities. Elvis Presley, Bob Hope and President Ronald Reagan were just a few of the celebrities that were graced by his presence. Although Sugar provided security for many, he also offered something different than most, he offered friendship, a warm smile, a funny wit, and an infectious laugh. Sugar was the Executive Director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation which allowed him the privilege of pursuing his life long dream of granting wishes for children in need. He also served as the Torch Run Coordinator during the OK89 Olympic Festival. Sugar was admired by many for his unconditional generosity and being a loyal friend and confidant. He ended his working years with the Oklahoma County Public Defenders Office. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, and beloved wife, Johnie. He is survived by his daughter Karrie Burgess, husband Bobby and two grandchildren that he adored Blake and Brooke. Whether one knew him as Ken, Kenny, Sugar or SugarPa he will be greatly missed.
