Kenneth W. Shons

Kenneth W. Shons DDS, MSD was born July 5, 1928 in Harrisburg, IL to Jean and Kenneth Shons. Ken never met a stranger and was always the life of the party. He served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948 where he survived the "Record Roll"in the Aleutian Islands and loved to tell stories about his experiences. He enjoyed his time attending Arkansas Tech, School of the Wonder Boys, and then the University of Kansas City School of Dentistry where he graduated in 1955. During his third year of oral surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 1958, he met Sandra Hollingsworth who was pursuing her nursing degree. Ken and Sandra were married in 1958 and then moved to Oklahoma City to start their family. They had three daughters, Linda, Susan, and Holly. He practiced oral surgery in Oklahoma City for thirty-five years and retired in 1993. While practicing, Ken held the position of President of the Midwestern Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and spent many years enjoying friendships made through this organization. Ken also received the honor of being inducted as a fellow into the International College of Dentists. Ken and Sandra fulfilled a dream in 1961 by purchasing a ranch in Logan County. They split their time between the dental office and the ranch, and spent many days of their week working until "late-thirty" raising and working cattle, fixing fences, and cutting hay. In addition, Ken was a golfer, fisherman, rancher, and hunter and was convinced he could fix almost anything if he had some bailing wire and duct tape. After his retirement, Ken and Sandra pursued another dream of theirs and purchased a motor home and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. He loved family holidays at home filled with the laughter and joy of his many grandchildren and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Kenneth Shons, his sister, Jean Weigandt, and son-in-law, Dr. Pete Carter. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, and three daughters, Linda, Susan, and Holly, son-in-law, Billy Bock, grandchildren, Erica, Michelle, and Alaina Carter, Hayley, Milly, and Elly Bock and Will and Claire Shons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Last Frontier Council, Boy Scouts of America or the University of Oklahoma College Of Dentistry.
