After a long, valiant fight with cancer, Lee left this earthly world of pain and suffering for a new eternal home with his Heavenly Father on January 12, 2014. Lee was born January 13, 1935, in Oklahoma City to Oscar and Bertha Schaefer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a longstanding member of Peace Lutheran Church, Edmond, Oklahoma. He graduated from Northeast High School and attended OU. Lee was a Ruf-nek at OU and a member of the Air National Guard. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired from his career at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. While stationed in Washington, D.C. he fell in love with Mavis Wendorf and they were married in 1958; she preceded him in death in 1989. Lee fell in love for the second time in his life with Sandra Babb; they married in 1991. Lee was an energetic person and wasn't happy unless he had a project to work on. He loved yard work, carpentry, traveling wherever the road led him, and genealogy. He also loved cars, once restoring a 1929 Model A. Lee possessed an endless thirst for life. His smile lit up a room and his optimism was contagious. His ability to recall names and details was powerful. Lee lived his faith and showed Christian love to all. Lee is survived by his wife, Sandra, children; Kerri (Gary) Veit, Scott (Jacqueline) Schaefer, and David Babb, grandchildren; Benjamin and Ashleigh Veit, and Preston and Zac Schaefer, sister; JoLynn (Richard) DeLaughter, nieces; Michele (Daryl) Osmus, Kimberly (Steve) Rice, and great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, at Smith and Kernke Funeral Home. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, at Peace Lutheran Church in Edmond. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Peace Lutheran Church.
