Mary Margaret Harris passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017, after a long and happy life devoted to her family and her church.
She was born Mary Margaret Lewis on April 4, 1923, near Achille, OK, to James Henry and Margaret Pearl Lewis. She moved to Oklahoma City in 1945 where she began attending St. Luke's Methodist Church at 8th and Robinson and met her future husband, C. Jack Harris. They were married on April 9, 1948, at St. Luke's, and lived in Oklahoma City for all of their 69 year marriage.
Margaret graduated from Southeastern State College in Durant, but her lifetime vocation was raising her four children, shepherding them to church, scouting meetings, lessons and athletics. Throughout her life she reminded her family to "Count Your Blessings," as she did.
In addition to the St. Luke's Women's Circle, she was a member of several book clubs, garden clubs and bridge clubs. She loved being outside in the sunshine, and was a dedicated gardener. She learned to snow ski in her 40's and continued to ski into her 80's. She was a community volunteer, an art collector and for 60 years an avid Sooner football fan.
Margaret and Jack travelled extensively, crossing the Atlantic 22 times for various trips. She especially loved Paris and an African safari. Six times she and Jack skied in European resorts. They made fond memories with family and friends in Vail, too, but she said she was always glad to come home to OKLAHOMA!
She is survived by her husband, C. Jack Harris, four children and their spouses, Marsha and Garnett Haubelt, Mark and Anne Harris, Cathy and Bob Young, all of Oklahoma City, and David and Van Noy Harris of Denver, CO. She also is survived by six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be Friday, August 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 222 N.W. 15th Street, Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Luke's United Methodist Church Foundation or the Salvation Army.
