Mark Stephen Hayes

Mark Stephen Hayes was born on July 12, 1949 in Stillwater, OK to Dr. Maggie Parks Hayes and Dr. Larry K. Hayes. He passed away July 17th, 2018 in Edmond, OK. Mark grew up in Stillwater and Oklahoma City, attending Northeast HS in OKC then graduating from Stillwater HS in 1967. He took up golf at age 6 and became one of Oklahoma's finest junior players. He played collegiate golf for OSU (1968-1971) where he was 2-time first team All American (1970-1971) before enlisting in the Army. He served at Ft. Jackson, SC golf course from 1971-1973, competing for the Army and concurrently playing Amateur golf. In 1972 he was a medalist in the Inter-Service Championship, runner-up in the U.S. Amateur and a member of the World Cup Team in Buenos Aires. As a professional Mark had 3 PGA Tour victories, the Byron Nelson, Pensacola Open and the 1977 Players Championship and was a member of the 1977 Ryder Cup Team. He also won the Tour-sponsored Tallahassee Open and claimed 3 Oklahoma Open crowns. In 1990 he started Mark Hayes Golf Course Design while continuing to compete on the Champions Tour. On New Year's Eve, 1971, Mark married the love of his life, Jana Gilbreth Hayes. She was his best friend, manager, and mother of their two sons, Kelly and Ryan. They were married 46 years, residing 42 years in their home in Edmond, OK. He was a devoted family man and extremely proud grandfather. Mark and Jana found a church home at Mayflower Congregational Church and were active members. Surviving Mark are his wife, Jana, of the home, sons Kelly and his wife Elizabeth of Denver, CO, Ryan and his wife, Rose of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and their two sons, Parker and Clark. The second of four brothers, Mark is also survived by Larry K. Hayes Jr. and wife Mary of Frisco, TX, Jim and wife Rhonda of Edmond, OK, and Dan and wife Claire of Goldsboro, NC. Preceding Mark in death were his parents, Dr. Larry K. Hayes Sr. and Dr. Maggie Parks Hayes. Memorial Services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 24th, 2018 at 10:00am at Mayflower Congregational Church, 3901 NW 63rd, Oklahoma City, OK 73116. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mayflower Congregational - 363 Homeless Ministry, Faithworks of the Inner City or the Alzheimer's Association.
