Marvin Kenneth Schlegel

Marvin Kenneth Schlegel was born on a farm near Otis, Kansas on May 22, 1930 and passed away in Oklahoma City on February 9, 2019. The son of Dave and Mollie Schlegel, he graduated from Otis Rural High School in 1948, where he excelled in sports and was valedictorian of his class. He attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri in 1949 and went to work for Continental Oil Company in Ponca City, Oklahoma in the Accounting Department. On January 4, 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Ina Mae Mausolf. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955 and was a lifetime Member of the El Reno American Legion. In 1959, he began selling life Insurance for Travelers Insurance Company and then formed the Schlegel Insurance Agency. His son Mark, joined him in business at the agency in 1981. Marvin joined St. Luke's United Methodist Church in 1950 where he was a very active member, holding several positions including member of the missions board, finance team, and was a trustee. He served as Chairman of the Administrative Board in 1984 and 1985. Marvin and Ina Mae started the Wedding Ring Class at St. Luke's in 1950. Marvin also started a painting group comprised of mostly retired members called the "Holi Rollers". Marvin was active in the insurance industry serving on various committees and was President of the Oklahoma City Association of Life Underwriters in 1977 and 1978. He received the "Agent of the Year" award in 1984. He was inducted into the Great Southern Life Insurance Company Hall of Fame in 1988. One of his great interests was Oklahoma State University Sports where he had football, basketball and baseball season tickets for many years. At basketball games he could be found waving his OSU flag from his seat overlooking the OSU bench. He was a member of the Heritage Society of the Oklahoma State University Foundation. He really enjoyed traveling all over the world but particularly around the "Good Ole USA" where he visited every state. His greatest love was for his family. He was always present at his grandchildren's games and performances and will be fondly remembered as a loving and supportive grandparent. Marvin is predeceased by one son, Matthew Kevin Schlegel, who died in 1968, his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters, and his wife Ina Mae. Survivors include son, Mark Kent Schlegel and his wife JoAnn of Oklahoma City, his grandchildren Kevin Hess Schlegel of Odessa, Texas and Debra Mollie Schlegel Sartin and Michael Philip Sartin of Carrollton, Texas. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 18, 2019, at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 222 NW 15th Street. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to The St. Luke's Foundation.
