Mary Anne Malone

Mary Anne Malone, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandmother, passed away on July 28, 2024, in Oklahoma City. Mary Anne was born at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City on August 10, 1941, to Ruth Eleanor (Grimes) Mark and Stewart Winston Mark. Mary Anne grew up initially in Tulsa and then in Oklahoma City and was a graduate of Casady School. Following high school graduation, Mary Anne attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and then the University of Oklahoma where she was a proud member of the Alpha Omicron chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta.

In 1965, Mary Anne married the love of her life, Hal Lewis Malone, II, in Oklahoma City where they resided, except for seven years in El Reno, Oklahoma where Hal was the Ford dealer. Together they were the proud parents of two boys, Mark Wilson Malone, Sr. and George Louis Malone, III. Mary Anne was a member of the Junior League of Oklahoma City and for many years served the community by actively participating in civic and charitable projects and organizations. Mary Anne was a member of All Souls’ Episcopal Church and devoted much of her time to her church and its outreach ministries. Mary Anne had many interests, including reading and travel.

Mary Anne (or Mamaw as she was known to her grandchildren) will always be remembered for driving cars with flags mounted on each window. Many a “Mamaw sighting” were reported around Oklahoma City. Mamaw was known for picking up her grandchildren from school and taking them to get a snack in her car decked out in its flags. To add to the humor of the situation, Mamaw, on multiple occasions, pulled into the drive-thru of a local restaurant to order the snack only to be told by her grandchildren that she was speaking to a trash can and not the official speaker system through which an order was to be placed.

It’s also no secret that Mamaw wasn’t the best driver in town. On one occasion, while visiting her son, Mark, Mamaw managed to get her car, adorned with its flags, high-centered on a large decorative rock near the street at Mark’s house. Lucky for Mamaw several members of the Nichols Hills Fire Department and their truck were across the street testing a fire hydrant and were able to come to Mamaw’s rescue and lift her car off the rock so she could continue on her way. And in yet another example of how driving for Mamaw was just a means to an end, Mamaw found herself running late to one of her grandson’s soccer games, and not finding a close parking spot, made her own parking spot on top of a retaining wall where she left the front end of her car, flags and all, teetering over a drainage ditch. Mamaw called AAA and continued inside to watch the soccer game.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by Hal, her son, George, her parents, her brother, Stephen S. Mark, maternal grandparents, Hubert I. Grimes and Vera A. Grimes, and paternal grandparents, Raymond Winston Mark and Gertrude Stewart Mark.

Mary Anne is survived by her son, Mark, and his wife, Lisa, of Oklahoma City, daughter-in-law, Stephanie D. Malone, of Seattle, Washington, her three grandchildren, Linley, Will and Abe Malone, brother-in-law, George D. Malone, niece, Kathryn Johnson, and her husband, Jim, and nephew, Philip G. Malone.

The family appreciates the compassionate care that Touchmark at Coffee Creek, Iris Memory Care of NW Oklahoma City and Frontier Hospice provided to Mary Anne.
