Mary Hulene Griffin

Heaven welcomed a special angel on Friday when Mary "Hulene" passed peacefully with both daughters at her side. She was born on January 25th, 1926 to J.B. and Ethel Perritt Fincher in Ruston, LA. Hulene 'Ene'(as she was called all thru her life) was the oldest of 6 siblings who adored her. She attended Ruston High and loved sharing the story about the time her home-economics teacher was kidnapped by Bonnie and Clyde. After attending Louisiana Tech she was a secretary for Jack Ritchie at Ritchie's in Ruston for many years, where she made many wonderful friends and memories. During this time she met the love of her life, M. C. Griffin, and they married on January 4, 1953. They later moved to Texas where they had their 2 daughters, Susan and Dianne, before moving to Oklahoma City in 1960. She worked with Marvin ("Griff") at his Real-estate company until his death in 1976. In May of that year she began a new phase of her life when she started working at Jackie Cooper Lincoln Mercury where she ran the switchboard for over 25 years and made countless friends. She loved playing 'mother hen' to the young salesmen and enjoyed baking cakes for all of their birthdays. Mom loved baking and was known for her famous pound cake. When she wasn't baking cakes, cookies, breads, or making candy for family and friends, she was gardening and grew spectacular roses and peonies, which she loved showing off, then cutting and sharing with others. She prized her cherry trees, and her grandkids looked forward to helping her pick the cherries to make the jelly that everyone loved spreading on her hot-out-of-the-oven sour-dough bread. Mom never met anyone she didn't like and everyone loved her! She was loving, caring, and so giving. A true Southern girl. She leaves behind her two daughters: Susan Anderson of Oklahoma City and Dianne Ragain with husband Bobby, of Dallas., and her two cherished grandchildren, Creighton Anderson, of San Francisco, Ca, and Colby Anderson, of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by two sisters: Bettye Collins, husband Russell, and Pat Austin, and a brother, Ted Fincher, wife Nellie all of Ruston. As well as her sister-in-law, Lucille Griffin Newell, of New Orleans who was like a sister to her. And, countless nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mom was preceded in death by both parents, brother, J.B. Fincher Jr., sister, Naomi Pilcher, two nieces: Ginny Bishop and Sandra Martin., as well as two very dear friends: Nelda Ferguson (who Mom spoke of often in her last weeks, and who we believe helped her cross over), and Bea Dewell (who has been anxiously waiting for her 'baking buddy'- Heaven will have no shortage of treats now!) Mom/Gran we will miss your sweet voice, your bits of wisdom, that cute smile, and your pound cake! A memorial service will be held on August 14, 2013 at Smith and Kernke, N. May at 1:00 pm.
