Mercedes Allen, 93, passed away on January 31, 2011. She was born to Mary Lee and Martin Luther Davenport on September 1, 1917 in Shawnee Oklahoma. Mercedes moved to Oklahoma City to attend Sacred Heart Elementary School and graduated from Classen High School in 1935. Mercedes married Claude J. Allen on June 19, 1938 and was married almost 48 years at the time of his death. They had 3 children, Carol, Joe and Judy. She was a homemaker for many years and worked as a bookkeeper for LB Price Mercantile Company for over 20 years before her retirement at age 65. Cooking was Mercedes' passion especially her meringue pies. She will be remembered for her quick wit and keen sense of humor. Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Mary Carrillo and brother, Kermitt Davenport. She is survived by Carol (Larry) Link of Granbury, TX, Joe (Ann) Allen and Judy (Greg) Nelson of Oklahoma City, Sisters Gail Adams of Oklahoma City and Wakita Conkling of Santa Maria, California, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mercedes was a life-long member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. A prayer vigil will be held at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home, 1401 NW 23rd St, at 7:00 PM, Friday, February 4, 2011. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 5, 2011 in the chapel at Resurrection Cemetery located at 7801 NW Expressway. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Saint Patrick Catholic Church Building Fund, 2121 N Portland, OKC, OK 73107.
