Norman George Stoner, Sr.

Norman George Stoner ("Nod") was born in Monroe, Michigan to parents Robert and Ruth (Blum) Stoner on June 27, 1942. His father died when he was 2 years old. His mother remarried a decade later and his stepfather was Robert Bedell. Norm grew up in Monroe and graduated from high school there. He married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Toole, and they had three sons. After graduating from Michigan State University, Norm joined General Motors and worked in safety and security in Flint, MI and Norwood, OH. He came to Oklahoma City in 1978. As Manager of Security and Fire Prevention he was responsible for hazardous materials, fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical response, and other areas. Norm also received his master's degree in Criminal Justice Administration from OCU. He was frequently involved in investigations with other agencies, both local and federal. In 1992 he took early retirement to care for his wife who passed away in 1993. He then joined Mercy Health Center as Chief of Security. Following that he taught courses in topics relating to investigations and security for CLEET and the Vocational Education system. He loved teaching and spent many hours working with students that needed extra attention. He was active in professional organizations such as the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS), and served as an officer. In 1995 he met Jane Carney and they formed a loving partnership that lasted until his death. Norm was genial and had a wonderful smile, but when he put on his "Security Officer" face he could put fear into anyone. Growing up on Lake Erie, he was on the water from an early age. And coming from a family that included Great Lakes sea captains, he was always in love with sailing. He enjoyed sailing Lake Hefner on his boat, The Seeker. Norm was very generous with both money and time, supporting multiple charities and giving to individuals when they were in need. He always mentored his employees, encouraging them to seek and to finish additional degrees. In retirement Norm and Jane traveled the world, including China, Australia and New Zealand, Africa, South America, and Europe. His favorite trip was to East Africa. Norm was preceded in death by his wife Brenda, and his parents. He is survived by his loving partner Jane of the home; his brother Robert Stoner (Carlene) of Bellevue, MI; his sons Norman Stoner Jr. (Cassie) of McKinney, Texas; Ric Stoner (Kayci) of Edmond, OK; Ted Stoner (Rosie) of Alameda, California; his step-daughter Kate Huston (Greg), and step-son Daniel Carney of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Tyler, Holden, Brendon, Carson, Saylor, and Sam Stoner, and Brigid Huston. We are all richer for his smile, his humor, his integrity, and his love. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, September 25, at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, 127 NW 7th Street, Oklahoma City. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.
