Opal G. Akins

Opal G. Akins was born July 1, 1929 in Johnston County, Oklahoma. She died on March 13, 2014, at the age of 84. Throughout her life, Miss Opal, as she has been known to those who love her, has adhered to the Christin way of life, and most recently as a faithful member of Village Baptist Church. One of the highlights of her life came as she traveled to the Holy Land with her church community, to absorb more deeply the roots of her faith by walking in the places where Jesus walked and learning in the places where he taught. Miss Opal has always lived in Oklahoma, having grown up in the Bromide area. It was in her early school days when she discovered basketball and became part of the girl's basketball team. Basketball remained a passion of hers throughout her life. She also loved fishing. Miss Opal moved to the Shawnee area in 1947 and graduated from Dale School in 1948. During this time, she met the love of her life, Alva Akins. Opal and Al married on May 15, 1949. Together, they shared many life adventure, including traveling the world. Miss Opal and Mr. Al owned and operated the Akins Apollo Hair Center together for 15 years, before Al passed. Opal continued to own and operate the business and over the years won several awards and honors with the Apollo World-Wide Hair System. Opal loved her business and loved helping people. Of note, is the fact that many hairpieces have been created through the Akins Hair Center, for people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. Wigs and hair pieces have helped restore dignity to those undergoing the challenges of their illness. Opal is predeceased by her husband, Al Akins, 5 sisters and 2 brothers. She is survived by her brother -in-law, James Akins, of Portales, New Mexico; many nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Nan Caldwell, as well as many other relatives and friends. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Village Baptist Church, the VFW, or any charity of their choice. Visitation will be at Smith and Kernke, 14624 N May, Ave., Sunday, March 16, from 9:00 AM through 6:00 PM. Funeral Service will be on Monday, March 17, at 10:00 AM, at Village Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City.
