Penelope "Penny" Irene Mengers passed away on August 13, 2023 at the age of 79. Penny was a devoted and beloved daughter, mother, and grandmother. Penny was born to Gertrude and John E. Lewis on May 23, 1944. She was a life-long resident of Oklahoma City and a graduate of Northeast High School, Class of 1962. It was here that she met Randall Mengers, and the two would marry and raise their daughter Shawn and son Mark.As a young woman, Penny was a talented artist who loved to draw and paint. Her creative and festive spirit also came out during every holiday. For many years, even once she lived alone, she continued to decorate her house for Christmas, Easter, and Halloween. Halloween was her favorite of all: she would prepare a huge bowl of candy, dress her teacup poodle in a costume, and invite her grandchildren over to celebrate.Penny will be remembered in many cherished moments like these. Among her son Mark's best memories is fishing with her at Lake Texoma during their annual family trips. Her daughter Shawn will remember the many drives to voice lessons and play rehearsals during her teen years, as well as the many long conversations they shared as adults. Her grandchildren will most remember Penny's babysitting rituals. She always kept mint jam and mint tea in the house, special delicacies they believed could not be found anywhere else. She always kept puzzles and toys and was quick to join the kids' games. All who knew her will remember her warmth, her wit, and her deep love for her family.Penny is preceded in death by her father, Dr. John Emmett Lewis; her mother, Gertrude Gill Lewis; and her two brothers, William Rodney "Rod" Lewis and John Emmett Lewis Jr. She is survived by her former husband, Randall Jerome Mengers; her son Mark Randall Mengers; her grandson John Randall Mengers; her daughter Shawn Christy Witcher; her son-in-law James Christopher Witcher; and her granddaughters Jenifer Christy Witcher and Julia Gill Witcher.
