Rebecca Cashion Hunzicker

Our precious mother and "Gamma," Rebecca Cashion Hunzicker, joined her beloved husband, Walter, at the heavenly banquet on November 14, 2012. A lady to the core, but also deemed "The Queen of Sass" by her great-granddaughter Lizzie, Rebecca was much loved by her large family and many friends. She will be greatly missed by all! The oldest of six children, Rebecca was born April 19, 1915, in Eudora, Arkansas, to Medford and Mary Cashion. She attended Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia, but moved to Oklahoma with her family in 1934 and transferred to the University of Oklahoma where she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. She married the love of her life, Walter Hunzicker, on June 15, 1936, and they spent 53 wonderful years together before his death in 1989. Rebecca and Walter raised four beautiful children together – Fritz, Becky, Tommy, and Molly – and then traveled the world, visiting all fifty states and 67 countries throughout the world. Rebecca had such a spirit of adventure and thrived on seeing new places and experiencing different cultures. She continued to travel widely until the last few years of her life and carried on lifelong correspondences with friends gathered from around the globe whom she met through her travels. Rebecca loved her family dearly and delighted in spending time with her children and their spouses as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a gift for friendship and hospitality, loved to entertain, and was a wonderful cook. Playing bridge with her friends and Rummikub with her family were favorite pastimes, but she also enjoyed playing the piano, reading widely, and needlepointing. Her home and her garden were her particular passions, and she was blessed to live in the home she built with Walter in 1938 until the end of her life. She especially loved her rose garden and always kept fresh flowers throughout her home. Rebecca was gracious and elegant, generous and spirited, lively, curious, and independent. She loved the Lord and her Catholic faith was an anchor in her life. Rebecca was a member of the Junior League of Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma City Symphony, the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, Christ the King Church and Altar Society, Queensbury Club, Seventy-Five Club, Oklahoma City Zoological Society, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and the Science Museum of Oklahoma. Rebecca is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hunzicker; her parents, Mary and Medford Cashion; and her siblings, Mary Elizabeth Vahlberg and Hilliard Cashion. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren: Fritz and Marcia Hunzicker (Elizabeth Hunzicker; Andrew Hunzicker, wife Nicole, and children Jack, Robert, and William; Mary Christian Hunzicker and children Phillip Martin, Heather Martin, and Samuel Martin; Sheridan Judd, husband Kevin, and daughters Lauren and Caroline; and William Hunzicker, wife Kerstin, and daughters Kristyn and Savannah); Becky and Byrne Vickers (Beth Lockard, husband Mike, and children Todd, Austin, and Lizzie; Laura Campbell and children Brian, Aiden, and Ian; Lisa Hupp, husband Keith, and children Cashion and Lillian Rebecca; and Trish Doerhoff, husband Dale, and son Ryan); Tom and Ann Hunzicker (John Hunzicker, wife Holly, and daughter Avery; Holly Hunzicker; Hogan Hunzicker; and Thomas Hunzicker); and Molly and Bob Kinniburgh (Jimmy Kinniburgh and children Miranda and Keegan; Chris Kinniburgh; and David Kinniburgh). She is also survived by her siblings Medford Cashion, Lamar Cashion, and Sandy Cashion along with his wife, Kathryn. The family would like to thank the incredibly special women from Laura Lynn's Home Care – Lorine, Portia, Shay, Katrina, and Phyllis – for their loving kindness, tender care, and untiring service to Rebecca these last months of her life. We would also like to thank the amazing staff from Good Shepherd Hospice – Chaplain Nancy, Roxanna, Lynette, Diana, Sandy, Jennifer, and Liz – who guided us through difficult terrain with tremendous compassion and gentleness. They truly made Rebecca's final journey a sacramental experience. A rosary will be held at Smith & Kernke Northwest 23rd Street on Friday, November 16, at 7 p.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Christ the King Catholic Church on Saturday, November 17, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Walter Hunzicker Fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, the St. Lawrence Ministry at Christ the King Catholic Church, or the charity of your choice.
